Vancouver, BC – The University of Victoria took down the University of British Columbia 37-21 in the semi-finals of the BC Rugby Premier League playoffs, May 2 at Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.
Coats' leg launched the Vikes to a dominant first-half.
- Jack Marshall opened the scoring as he found the try zone in the seventh minute of the first half, finishing off sustained pressure in the UBC end. Coats converted on the kick for the Vikes to grab the opening momentum.
- Cooper Coats stepped up and nailed a pair of penalty kicks in the 28th and 31st minutes, pushing the Vikes to a 13-0 lead.
- Coats was not done with his explosive first half. Cooper added a try of his own, paired with the conversion for a solo seven-point play. The Vikes controlled every facet of the game, building a 20-0 halftime lead.
The lead was too large for a Thunderbirds' comeback.
- Victoria picked right back up on their dominant play out of the halftime break, as Josh McIndoe launched the Vikes right back into the scoring column. McIndoe finished off a strong scoring drive as the Vikes were rewarded for another stellar start to a half. Coats remained perfect as he converted for a 27-0 lead.
- UBC found their first offensive success in the 50th minute, trimming the lead to 27-7 with half an hour remaining in the game.
- Reece Thompson responded to the T-Birds' score as the Vikes retook the momentum and added to their 34-7 lead.
- Cooper Coats completed the penalty kick hat trick as he nailed his third of the day, putting the Vikes in front by 30 with five minutes left in the match.
- UBC added a pair of tries in the dying minutes of the game, but the Vikes had all but wrapped up the match with their large lead. The Thunderbirds' tries in the 77th and 80th minutes closed the gap to 37-21, but the Vikes earned the victory with their dominant performance.
The emphatic semi-final victory sets up a date with the UBCO Ravens, defending Premier League Champions, in this year's Final. The Ravens defeated James Bay AA 45-5 in their semi-final match. The Final is set for May 9 at South Surrey Athletic Park, with the winner taking the BC Premier League title.
