VICTORIA - Completing the Victoria leg of the Canada West round robin tournaments, the defending U SPORTS National Champion University of Victoria women's field hockey team put together an undefeated, 4-0 weekend to open the 2021 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
17th Minute – UVic 1, CGY 0
- Capitalising on their first corner of the game, a serve to Anna Mollenhauer allowed her to send a shot directly past the Calgary keeper to put the Vikes in front.
21st Minute – UVic 2, CGY 0
- Passing in to the circle, Nora Struchtrup made the stop and tapped the ball to Chloe Langkammer beside her, who in turn put it in the back of the net for UVic.
26th Minute – UVic 3, CGY 0
- On the run, Anni Kleinschmidt reached out to stop the incoming pass. Still in motion, she dove as she sent her shot over the line for the third goal of the quarter.
34th Minute – UVic 4, CGY 0
- Drawing out the Calgary goalkeeper with play along the right side of the end line, Langkammer made herself open in front of the goal to receive the pass and tap the ball in to open the scoring in the second half.
39th Minute – UVic 5, CGY 0
- Notching her second of the morning, Mollenhauer added a another Vikes goal with a laser shot to the top left side of the net .
42nd Minute – UVic 6, CGY 0
- After initial shot attempts on the UVic breakaway were saved by the Calgary goalie, a scramble in the circle led to the ball finding the stick of Janet Dawson, who secured her first goal of the season on the shot.
43rd Minute – UVic 7, CGY 0
- Not even a minute later, Langkammer earned herself a hat trick, scoring her third goal of the morning and rounding out the scoring for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
- The 7-0 win is the largest shutout win for the Vikes since Oct. 21, 2017, when the UVic defeated Calgary, 6-0.
- UVic has now won the past four matchups between the two sides, and improve their unbeaten streak against the Dinos to 34 games.
- After leading Canada West with a .63 goals against average in 2019, Robin Fleming gave the Vikes 60 shutout minutes to start the season.
GAME TWO: Victoria 3, UBC 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
20th Minute – UVic 1, UBC 0
- Restarting at the centre line, the Vikes sent a quick pass into the circle to the waiting Chloe Langkammer, who took advantage of the out of position UBC goalkeeper to score the first goal of the contest.
34th Minute – UVic 2, UBC 0
- Awarded a corner early into the second half, Nora Struchtrup found the rebound off the initial shot attempt to send it to the back of the net and put UVic up by two.
39th Minute – UVic 3, UBC 0
- Heading down the field on a breakaway, a series of passes led to Ashton Aumen, who tapped the ball in to finish the play and score for the Vikes.
49th Minute – UVic 3, UBC 1
- On a Thunderbirds corner, UBC was able to score to get on the board.
WORTH NOTING
- UBC was awarded four corners in the first quarter to UVic's zero, all of which were thwarted by the Vikes' defence.
- The Thunderbirds controlled possession for most of the first half, allowing few Vikes' possessions until the first goal of the game.
- Following the game, the Vikes improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Thunderbirds moved to 1-1.
GAME THREE: Victoria 6, Calgary 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
10th Minute - UVic 1, CGY 0
- After intercepting a Dino pass, the ball made its way to Erin Dawson, who slapped a shot to the back of the net to open the scoring.
17th Minute - UVic 2, CGY 0
- Passed in from Ashton Aumen, Dawson netted her second goal of the contest with a similar-looking shot to her first for the two-goal lead.
40th Minute - UVic 3, CGY 0
- Inside the circle, Aumen drew out the Calgary goalkeeper, and after a quick pass to Madeline Mittelsteadt a few steps away, Mittelsteadt sent it in for the her first goal of the evening.
43rd Minute - UVic 4, CGY 0
- Receiving the pass on the penalty spot, Nora Struchtrup squared up and fired the ball in to the net to extend UVic's lead.
45th Minute - UVic 5, CGY 0
- After the Calgary keeper made a diving save just moments earlier, the Vikes found the deflection and got it to Chloe Langkammer, who got her shot off before the Dinos' goalkeeper could get back in front.
59th Minute - UVic 6, CGY 0
- Sending a pass in from the end line, Mittelsteadt was able to put a stick on it and score her second of the game.
WORTH NOTING
- The shutout marked the second of the season for Vikes goalkeeper Robin Fleming.
- The Vikes scored in the opening quarter for the first time in three games.
- UVic was able to dominate possession, holding its ground for most of the game.
GAME FOUR: Victoria 3, UBC 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
35th Minute - UVic 1, UBC 0
- After a restart just outside the 25, the Vikes passed their way to Chloe Langkammer, who sent a high shot to the top of the cage over the goalkeeper's hand to open the scoring.
36th Minute - UVic 2, UBC 0
- Not even a minute later, the Vikes would regain possession, and Langkammer would once again take her shot. This time from out wide left, the first-year fired a laser to the top right of the goal for her second of the day.
38th Minute - UVic 3, UBC 0
- Diving for the ball in a scramble inside the circle, Nora Struchtrup managed to get her shot off while in mid-dive from the top of the circle, sending it over the line to extend the Vikes' lead.
WORTH NOTING
- With the 35th minute goal today, the Vikes have scored first in every game so far this season.
- UVic was not awarded their first corner until about the 44th minute- after all three of their goals.
- All of UVic's goals came in the third quarter during today's game, as did a total of 12 of the 19 Vikes goals during the tournament.
- With the shutout, Robin Fleming now has three on the season, and allowed just one total goal throughout the tournament.
