Vancouver, B.C. – Overcoming as much as a 12-point deficit, the University of Victoria women's basketball team downed rivals University of British Columbia, 74-72, at the buzzer to pick up the program's first win of the season and first for new Head Coach
Carrie Watts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UBC 20, UVic 10
- UBC would control the opening minutes of the first half, taking a 12-0 over the first four and a half minutes of play.
- Brooklyn White was able to start the Vikes offensive with a layup, making the score 12-2.
- Tana Pankratz would help the Vikes' keep the Thunderbirds' lead to 10 in the first quarter, notching five points in the opening frame of play.
2nd Quarter – UBC 41, UVic 31
- A 6-1 Vikes run would cut UBC's to single digits, 37-29, with just over two minutes to play in the half.
- After a Thunderbirds bucket would put the hosts back up 10, the Vikes would hold the Thunderbirds to 1-of-6 shooting in the final minute and half to stay in reach, 41-31.
- Pankratz and Ashlyn Day each ended the half with nine points, while Mimi Sigue led the Vikes with six boards.
3rd Quarter – UVic 58, UBC 58
- Beginning to cut in to UBC's lead, a three-pointer from Pankratz brought the Vikes within five, 49-44.
- Three's from Day and Pankratz brought the score even, 52-52, the first tie since the start of the game.
- Trading buckets for the final minute, the Vikes stayed even with the Thunderbirds to finish tied at 58-all after 30 minutes of play.
- The Vikes outscored the Thunderbirds 27-17 in the quarter to pull even.
4th Quarter - UVic 74, UBC 72
- Opening the quarter with a three-point play, Day was fouled on her made layup and made the awarded free throw in the opening minute.
- Back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, the Vikes and Thunderbirds would trade one-point leads until the game was pulled even by the Thunderbirds at 72.
- Inbounding the ball with two seconds on the clock, Aleah Ashlee found Pankratz who made the bucket for the Vikes buzzer-beater to seal the game, 74-72.
WORTH NOTING
- The win is the first for the Vikes on the season, now at 1-1 overall.
- In her first season at the helm of Victoria, the win has significance for new bench boss Watts, who spent the previous 15 seasons at UBC as an assistant coach.
- Pankratz posted a career-high 26 points in the win, adding six rebounds, four blocks, three assists, and two steals to her stat line.
- Day led all players in the game with 28 points, and tallied two rebounds and two assists.
