High-scoring first half propels Vikes past Spartans

Langley, B.C. – Five first-half goals pushed the University of Victoria men's soccer team to victory over Trinity Western University, Oct. 8.

HOW IT HAPPENED
6th Minute – TWU 1, UVic 1
  • A quick start for TWU, the Spartans were the first to get on the board and take the lead.
10th Minute – UVic 1, TWU 1
  • Notching his second goal of the season, Evan Libke put the ball in the back of the net on a pass from Rees Goertzen.
18th Minute - UVic 2, TWU 1
  • The game-winner came eight minutes later courtesy of Ian Whibley, notching his first goal of the season.
37th Minute – UVic 3, TWU 1
  • With one not being enough for the night, Aiden Taylor connected with Whibley in the box, who recorded the brace with his second goal of the night.
37th Minute – UVic 4, TWU 1
  • 30 seconds later, Isaac Koch broke through for the first time this season, with a strike past the Spartans' goalkeeper.
44th Minute – UVic 5, TWU 1
  • Also going for the brace, Koch netted his second in the final minutes of the first half to seal the scoring for the game.
WORTH NOTING
  • After tonight, the Vikes have had four, two-goal performances this season: Jose Sagaste vs. UNBC, Sept. 10, Harrison Ritter West vs. UNBC, Sept. 11, and Whibley and Koch vs. TWU, Oct. 8.
  • The Vikes totaled nine shots on the night, five of which were goals.
  • The five-goal performance marks the most goals scored by UVic since Sept. 23, 2018, when the Vikes blanked Lethbridge, 5-0 at Centennial Stadium.

Langley, B.C. – Battling rainy conditions, the University of Victoria men's soccer team blanked Trinity Western University, 3-0, on the road, Oct. 9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
15th Minute – UVic 1, TWU 0
  • Adding to their weekend point totals, Ian Whibley found Isaac Koch in the box, who struck his first shot of the match past the TWU keeper for the first goal of the game.
42nd Minute – UVic 2, TWU 0
  • A corner kick from Mark Kaiser found Whibley to receive the kick, who sent it to the back of the net to extend the Vikes' lead and secure his third goal of the weekend.
90th Minute – UVic 3, TWU 0
  • Recording a brace in back-to-back games, Koch slipped one past the keeper in the final minute of play for his fourth goal of both the season and the weekend.
WORTH NOTING
  • UVic took the lead in a game for the first time since Sept. 17, in its 1-0 win at UFV.
  • Koch's third and fourth goals of the weekend puts him at the top of the team leaderboard for season goals (4).
  • Koch and Whibley combined for eight of the Vikes' 12 scoring points over the two games.
  • The two wins over Trinity Western mark the Vikes' first series sweep of an opponent over the season.
  • The Vikes improve to 4-1-3 on the season after the pair of wins, while TWU falls to 3-3-4.
