Going for gold: Men's Soccer punches ticket to Canada West gold medal game

Calgary, Alta. – In shutout fashion, the University of Victoria men's soccer team clinched their spot in the 2021 Canada West Finals with a 5-0 win over the University of the Fraser Valley, Nov. 6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
9th Minute – UVic 1, UFV 0
  • Inside the first 10 minutes of play, Mark Kaiser found Jose Sagaste, who was able to net the game-winner in the opening minutes.
19th Minute – UVic 2, UFV 0
  • On the attack, Isaac Koch launched a cross to Ian Whibley, who met it with his head inside the six yard box to knock it to the back of the net and double the Vikes' lead.
33rd Minute – UVic 3, UFV 0
  • Trey Ference then had a turn finding the back of the net, launching a shot over the head of the Cascades' goalkeeper for his first goal of the season and the three-goal Vikes lead in the first half.
50th Minute – UVic 4, UFV 0
  • Breaking away, Koch scored his first goal of the game but second point on a laser shot past the UFV keeper to open the second-half scoring.
73rd Minute – UVic 5, UFV 0
  • Beginning with a straight-on shot by Evan Libke, the UFV keeper was able to deflect it for the save. The deflection headed right to nearby Sergio Duran, who shot from the right side of the box to the back left of the net for the final Vikes' goal of the day.
WORTH NOTING
  • Making their first semifinal appearance since 2015, Sunday's gold medal debut will be the Vikes' first since the same year. In addition, UVic will look for its first Canada West title since 2011.
  • Vikes goalkeeper Harjot Nijjar recorded his sixth clean sheet of the season, tallying two saves on the day. Nijjar and the Vikes' defence handled several promising attacks by the Cascades to keep them off the board throughout the game.
  • UVic tallied 17 shots on the day, putting 11 on target. This out-shot UFV, who had eight total shots and six on target.
  • The Vikes are now 8-3-3 on the 2021 season with the win.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH BRUCE WILSON
"We knew UFV was a good team, so we came prepared for that," began the 2021 Canada West Coach of the Year. "We really worked on our discipline and it showed, so I think we deserved that win. It's going to be interesting to see who comes out of the [gold medal] game. Whoever we play, both teams go to nationals and that's a bonus."

UP NEXT
