Vikes take silver at Canada West Championships

Calgary, Alta. – The University of Victoria men's soccer team will bring silver medals home to Victoria, as the Vikes fell to the University of British Columbia, 1-0, in the Canada West title game, Nov. 7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
27th Minute – UBC 1, UVic 0
  • Finding the right timing, the Thunderbirds managed to get their cross in to the box, where the waiting goal scorer would take a touch and send the ball to the back of the net for the game-winner.
WORTH NOTING
  • Isaac Koch nearly put the Vikes ahead in the third minute, after beating the 'Birds' defence to get to the ball and getting a good look off. However, UBC's keeper was able to make the save.
  • In extra time at the end of the first half, Ian Whibley had a look for the equalizer on an open net, but his shot went off the crossbar and kept the Thunderbirds in front.
  • UVic finished with 20 shots on the afternoon, 12 of which were on target.
  • Harjot Nijjar picked up four saves in 90 minutes of play.
  • The Vikes sit at 8-4-3 on the season, and have secured a bid to the U SPORTS National Championships as the Canada West runner-up.
THOUGHTS FROM HEAD COACH BRUCE WILSON
"We're not happy we didn't win here but still I thought we played okay and both teams go [to Nationals] so we still have a shot."

THOUGHTS FROM DEFENDER EVAN LIBKE
"Congrats to UBC, they came out and battled for 90 minutes," said the Canada West All-Star. "The focus for us now is turning to nationals in a week and a half here and we're aiming for the top. We think we're one of the best teams in the country and I think we can prove it on any given day."
