VICTORIA – Earning a "W" in its first Canada West matchup of the season, the University of Victoria men's soccer team took down the University of Northern British Columbia, 2-1, to open the 2021 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
37th Minute - UVic 1, UNBC 0
  • Jose Sagaste managed to wrangle the ball off a broken play, sending it past the UNBC keeper to put the Vikes on the board.
65th Minute - UVic 2, UNBC 0
  • Awarded a free kick, members of the UVic side scattered in the box, making way for Sagaste to collect the deflection from Ian Whibley and sent it to the back of the net to secure his second goal of the night.
85th Minute - UVic 2, UNBC 1
  • The Timberwolves would go on the attack in the final 10 minutes of the game, managing to score and pull within one in the final five minutes.

WORTH NOTING
  • Sagaste finished the night with a brace, scoring both goals for the Vikes. 
  • Victoria finished the match with the 18-to-9 advantage in shots.
  • Goalkeeper Harjot Nijjar tallied four saves on the night in his 90 minutes of play.
  • UNBC held the possession advantage to open the second half until the Vikes goal.

VICTORIA - Undeterred by a first half, 2-0 deficit, the University of Victoria men's soccer came back to tie the University of Northern British Columbia, 2-2, to finish out the series at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
17th Minute - UNBC 1, UVic 0
  • The Timberwolves converted on a penalty kick to take an early lead in the game.
45th Minute - UNBC 2, UVic 0
  • UNBC doubled its lead with just seconds remaining before the half.
55th Minute - UNBC 2, UVic 1
  • After both subbing on just two minutes earlier, Harrison Ritter West connected on a throw in from Hamish Ogden to send the ball to the back of the net and put UVic on the board.
62nd Minute - UVic 2, UNBC 2
  • The Ogden-Ritter West duo would reunite once more, with Ogden finding the foot of Ritter West outside the box, who in turn sent a strike to the back of the net for the equalizer.

WORTH NOTING
  • With two goals from Ritter West, two UVic players have recorded braces over the first two games of the season.
  • With the draw, the Vikes complete their opening weekend with an unbeaten record (1-0-1).
  • Harjot Nijjar made a critical save in the 77th minute, making the stop in midair to keep the game tied. The goalkeeper finished the night with three saves.
  • The Vikes almost found the game-winner in the 88th minute on a corner kick, as the serve found the head of Evan Libke, but the header hit the post and prevented the goal.
  • Victoria finished the night with the advantage in shots (11-to-9) and corner kicks (4-to-3).

UP NEXT
UVic will head to Abbotsford, BC to take on the University of the Fraser Valley for two games, Sept. 17 and Sept. 19.
