Vikes battle Cascades to scoreless draw in series opener

ABBOTSFORD – Battling rainy condition in their first road match of the Canada West season, the University of Victoria women's soccer team ended its Friday night contest in a scoreless draw with the University of the Fraser Valley, Sept. 17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite a series of chances from both sides, neither was able to put the ball in the back of the net during the 90 minutes of play.
  • UFV started on the offensive, accruing more chances in the first half. However, the Vikes would dominate the chances in the second half. 
WORTH NOTING
  • With the draw, the Vikes move to 2-0-1 on the season.
  • With the shutout, UVic goalkeeper Kayley Lidstone has posted clean sheets in back-to-back starts.
  • Both teams finished with 10 shots on the night, with Victoria holding the 6-to-4 edge in shots on goal.
  • Tess Vande Vegte led the offensive effort, tallying three shots for the Vikes on the night.

ABBOTSFORD - In a "déjà vu" game of sorts, the University of Victoria and University of the Fraser Valley battled to a 0-0 draw for the second time, Sept. 19.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Shot stopper Kayley Lidstone posted her third clean sheet of the season, notching one save on six UFV shots.
  • Both sides finished with six total shots, with Victoria holding the 3-to-1 edge in shots on goal.

WORTH NOTING
  • Lidstone has now shut out her opponents in three consecutive games (vs. UNBC, Sept. 11, at UFV, Sept. 17, at UFV, Sept. 19).
  • Tess Vande Vegte once again led the offensive push for the Vikes, leading the team with two shots.
  • The Vikes move to 2-0-2 on the season and remain unbeaten in Canada West play.

UP NEXT
Victoria returns home to host Thompson Rivers University Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24-25, at Centennial Stadium. Both games will begin at 5 p.m.
