Field hockey crowned Canada West Champions for fourth-straight year

Vancouver, B.C. – Capturing the program's fourth-straight Canada West title, the University of Victoria women's field hockey team downed the University of British Columbia, 5-1, Oct. 23 at Wright Field.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 3, UBC 0
  • Madeline Mittelsteadt put the Vikes on the board in the seventh minute, firing the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
  • A penalty corner in the ninth minute allowed for Anna Mollenhauer to double UVic's lead with a goal.
  • As the first quarter came to a close, Mollenhauer found the back of the net once again, this time via field goal to give Victoria a 3-0 lead after 15 minutes of play. 
3rd Quarter – UVic 3, UBC 1
  • Finding their first goal of the weekend, a UBC penalty corner in the 38th minute put the Thunderbirds on the board.
4th Quarter – UVic 5, UBC 1
  • Scoring her second of the game, Mittelsteadt made it a 4-1 game for the Vikes with a goal in the 47th minute.
  • Sealing the Vikes win at 5-1, Nora Struchtrup sent the ball to the back of the net for a goal in the 56th minute. 
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes captured their fourth-straight Canada West banner with win.
  • Finishing the Canada West season at 7-0-1, the unbeaten campaign marked the third-straight under head coach Lynne Beecroft.
  • Mollenhauer finishes the conference season with eight goals, doubling her 2021 total (4) and also posting her third multi-goal game of the season.
  • Mittelsteadt's two goals marked her second multi-goal game of the year, while she finishes the Canada West season with five goals.
  • The Vikes did not concede more than one goal to UBC in any of the four matchups this season.
UP NEXT
As the Canada West Champion, the Vikes host the 2022 U SPORTS national championships. UVic will welcome the OUA Champion to Victoria, Nov. 3-7.
