VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated the University of Winnipeg, 91-66, in its home-opener at CARSA Performance Gym, Nov. 11.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jumping out to a quick 5-0 lead, a three from Ethan Boag and layup from Izzy Helman put points on the board in the first minute of play.
- Trading shots for the remainder of the period, the Vikes held a 20-14 advantage after the opening quarter.
- Starting to breakaway from the Wesmen, a three from Renoldo Robinson put the Vikes ahead by 10, 31-21, with 6:40 to play in the second.
- The last six minutes of the frame saw the Vikes embark on a 17-4 run to hold a 51-30 lead at the half.
- The Wesmen outscored the Vikes 23-16 in the third quarter to bring the score to 67-53 in favour of the home side after three quarters of action.
- Continuing to build out their lead in the fourth, Trent Monkman put the Vikes up by over 20, 76-55, with seven minutes to play.
- Holding the Wesmen at a distance for the remainder of the game, the Vikes sealed the win, 91-66.
WORTH NOTING
- Monkman led the Vikes with 22 points, going 7-for-9 from the field. He added five rebounds, two assists, and a team-high two steals in the win.
- Boag recorded 17 points in the victory, leading UVic with four made three-pointers.
- Oliveri set a new conference single-game season record with 18 rebounds. Oliveri held the previous season-high for the conference with 16 at Lethbridge, Nov. 5.
- A total of six Vikes finished with double-digit scoring performances in the win.
- The Vikes and Wesmen both hold 2-1 records after the first game of the series.
