VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball team used an early second-half surge to power past the University of Winnipeg, 94-79, Nov. 12 inside CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Wesmen used the first five minutes of the game to build a 12-point lead, 19-7.
- A layup from Renoldo Robinson with less than one minute to play in the first would bring the Vikes back within 10, 23-13, before a three from the Wesmen would seal the visiting side's first-quarter lead at 26-13.
- Outscoring Winnipeg 33-19 in the second, the Vikes evened the score at halftime, 46-46.
- Starting the third on a 10-0 run with back-to-back three's from Diego Maffia, a jumper from Elias Ralph and layup from Dominick Oliveri, the Vikes pulled ahead, 56-46, with 7:52 to play in the third.
- A final free throw from Robinson with 13 seconds left in the third put the Vikes ahead, 70-59, after three quarters of play.
- Keeping the Wesmen at bay in the fourth, the Vikes pulled away with the 94-79 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia led the Vikes with 28 points, also recording a team-high four assists in the win.
- Oliveri recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds, also adding a team-leading two steals.
- Trent Monkman and Robinson added double-digit scoring performances with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
- The Vikes move to 3-1 with the win, while the Wesmen fall to 2-2 with the loss.
