Edmonton, Alta. – A dominant second half propelled the University of Victoria men's basketball team past the University of Alberta, 92-71, Nov. 18 at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Alberta built a double-digit lead over the first seven minutes of the first quarter, taking a 23-10 lead.
- A 9-0 run over the final 3:32, capped by Diego Maffia three at the buzzer, brought the Vikes back within four, 23-19, at the end of the first.
- Consecutive points from Maffia via a three-pointer and a jumper in the first minute of the second quarter put the Vikes ahead, 24-23.
- Alberta took a six-point lead, 30-24, with just under eight minutes to play before Trent Monkman put the Vikes back ahead, 34-32, with a three with 4:45 to go.
- A Monkman jumper and Ethan Boag layup gave the Vikes a 42-39 lead at the half.
- The Vikes and Golden Bears stayed within two points of each other, trading leads through the first six minutes of the third quarter before the Vikes started to pull away.
- An 8-0 UVic run ending with a Renoldo Robinson three gave the Vikes a double-digit lead, 65-53, with less than two minutes to play in the third.
- Holding a 12-point edge, the Vikes led 67-55 after three quarters.
- Outscoring Alberta 25-16 for the second-straight quarter, the Vikes pulled away to capture the win, 92-71.
WORTH NOTING
- Dominick Oliveri recorded his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds in the win.
- Trent Monkman led the Vikes with 18 points, going 6-for-7 from the field.
- All seven Vikes that played at least 20 minutes registered double-digit scoring figures.
- The Vikes improve to 4-1 with the win, while Alberta drops to 2-3.
