Edmonton, Alta. – A final-minute push from the University of Alberta sent the Golden Bears past the University of Victoria men's basketball team, 89-84, Nov. 19 at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading baskets for the opening eight minutes of the game, the Vikes took their first lead of the night on a free throw by Trent Monkman, 16-15, with 2:12 to go.
- Alberta ended the first quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 22-18 lead after 10 minutes of play.
- The Golden Bears remained ahead in the second quarter, holding a 39-33 lead at the half.
- An Elias Ralph three with 1:57 to go in the third put the Vikes ahead, 59-56.
- Outscoring Alberta, 30-24 in the third, the Vikes tied the game at 63 all after 30 minutes of action.
- Extending the Vikes' lead over the first half of the fourth quarter, a three from Izzy Helman gave Victoria its largest lead of the game, 74-66, with 5:39 to play.
- The Golden Bears reclaimed the lead, 80-78, with 1:33 remaining in the game and never relinquished it, coming away with the 89-84 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Diego Maffia led the Vikes with 21 points, also contributing a team-high three assists.
- Elias Ralph finished the night with 17 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one block for the Vikes.
- One point shy of a double-double, Dominick Oliveri led the Vikes with a game-high 15 rebounds, adding nine points and three assists to his stat line.
- The Vikes move to 4-2 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to 3-3.
