VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated Trinity Western University, 85-69, Nov. 25 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Matching the first six points of the contest, the Vikes started to breakaway near the halfway point of the first quarter, taking a 12-6 lead at the first media timeout with 4:48 to play.
- Holding the Spartans scoreless for the final two and a half minutes of the first, the Vikes held an 18-10 lead after the first quarter.
- Opening the second quarter on an 11-2 run over four minutes, the Vikes built their lead to 29-12.
- A free throw from Ethan Boag put the Vikes ahead by 20, 38-18, with 1:24 until the half.
- The Vikes went into the halftime break up, 42-21.
- Despite being outscored 29-23 in the third quarter, the Vikes kept the Spartans at a distance, holding a 65-50 advantage after three frames.
- The Spartans managed to pull within 10, 75-65, with under three minutes remaining in the fourth, but the Vikes stopped any comeback efforts and came out on top, 85-69.
WORTH NOTING
- Diego Maffia led the Vikes with 22 points, also recording a team-high four assists and adding eight rebounds to his stat line.
- Trent Monkman, Ethan Boag and Elias Ralph each added 11-point performances, rounding out the double-digit scorers for UVic.
- Dominick Oliveri tallied a game-high 13 rebounds in the win.
- The Vikes improve to 5-2 with the win, while Trinity Western drops to 4-3 with the setback.
