VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball team claimed the weekend series win over Trinity Western University, 97-85, Nov. 26 at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 12-0 run for the Vikes allowed the home side to build a 28-11 lead with 1:30 to go in the opening frame, leading to a 30-18 Vikes lead at the end of the first.
- A layup from Elias Ralph gave the Vikes their biggest lead of the night, 53-32, with 1:26 to play until the half.
- Outscoring TWU 25-20 in the second quarter, the Vikes took a 55-38 lead into the halftime break.
- The Spartans cut in to the Vikes' lead in the third, bringing Victoria's lead to 77-66 after three quarters of play.
- A Trinity Western layup brought the Vikes' lead down to single-digits, 90-82, until a three from Diego Maffia brought it back up to 11, 93-82 with just over one minute to remaining in the game.
- Thwarting any final Trinity Western offensive spurts, the Vikes claimed the 97-85 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Ralph led the Vikes with 25 points, also tallying six rebounds, three steals and two assists in the win.
- Maffia was close behind with 24 points, adding nine rebounds and seven assists for the Vikes.
- Dominick Oliveri secured a double-double with 11 points and game-high 21 rebounds. The 21 rebounds mark the most in a single Canada West game so far this season.
- The Vikes improve to 6-2 with the win, while the Spartans drop to 4-4 with the loss.
