VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's basketball opened the weekend with a 114-80 victory over Mount Royal University, Dec. 2, at CARSA Performance Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A 7-0 Vikes run on a layup by Elias Ralph and layup and three-pointer from Diego Maffia put the Vikes ahead, 18-10, at the halfway point of the first quarter.
- Growing their lead, the Vikes led the Cougars 32-19 after 10 minutes of play.
- A three from Renoldo Robinson with 2:48 to go in the second gave the Vikes a 22-point advantage, 54-32.
- A 31-point second quarter for Victoria resulted in a 63-36 Vikes lead at the half.
- Continuing to build their lead in the third, the Vikes held a sizeable 93-63 lead after three quarters.
- Breaking the 100-point mark for Victoria, Trent Monkman knocked down a three with 7:05 remaining in the fourth, bringing the score to 102-69.
- Cruising to the end, the Vikes finished with the 114-80 win.
WORTH NOTING
- The 114 points are the most scored in a single game by the Vikes dating back to the 2011-12 season, with the previous high achieved being 107.
- Maffia recorded a team-leading 33 points and added a team-high five assists in the win.
- Robinson tallied 24 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Vikes.
- Ralph, Izzy Helman and Ethan Boag rounded out the Vikes' double-digit scoring performers with 11, 11 and 13 points, respectively.
- The Vikes move to 7-2 with the win, while the Cougars drop to 4-3 with the setback.
