Lethbridge, Alta. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team dominated the University of Lethbridge, 88-60, to claim their first win of the season, Nov. 5 at First Choice Savings Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- On a defensive tear to open the game, the Vikes held Lethbridge scoreless for nearly five minutes, not allowing the first Pronghorns bucket until the 5:08 mark of the first quarter.
- Victoria held a sizeable 22-3 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.
- Continuing to extend their lead through the second quarter, the Vikes went in to halftime with the 46-20 lead.
- A three-pointer from Izzy Helman gave the Vikes their largest lead of the quarter, 54-27, with just over seven minutes to play in the third.
- After being outscored by the Pronghorns, 32-17 in the third, the Vikes' lead sat at 11, 63-52, after 30 minutes of play.
- Keeping Lethbridge at bay in the fourth, Renoldo Robinson put the Vikes ahead by 30, 88-58, with a layup, before Lethbridge put the final points on the board to end the game with the Vikes in front, 88-60.
WORTH NOTING
- Victoria held the Pronghorns to two single-digit scoring quarters in the first (3 points) and fourth (8 points).
- Diego Maffia led all players in the contest with 31 points, going 12-for-16 from the field.
- Dominick Oliveri notched his first double-double of the year with 12 points and 16 rebounds, while also adding a team-high five assists.
- Elias Ralph and Robinson added 15 and 11 points, respectively, to round out the double-digit scoring performances for the Vikes.
- The Vikes and Pronghorns both end the Canada West opening weekend with records of 1-1.
