Vancouver, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's rugby team defeated Wilfrid Laurier University, 36-12, to advance to the consolation final at the Canadian University Men's Rugby Championships, Dec. 2 at Thunderbird Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
- A quick pass to Ethan Smith out of the scrum allowed the #9 to find an open lane and touch the ball down for the first try of the match. A successful convert from Ethan Hager gave the Vikes a 7-0 lead in the seventh minute.
- Laurier tied the game in the 11th minute with a try and convert, 7-7.
- Handing the ball off, Shane Rikley-Krindle made it across the line for the try and put the Vikes back in front. A second convert from Hager made the score 14-7 for the Vikes in the 21st minute.
- Finding an open lane down the right sideline, Jonas Robinson ran the ball in to extend the Vikes' lead to 19-7 in the 27th minute.
- Responding before the end of the half, Laurier made it a one-score game, 19-12, in the 29th minute with a try.
Second Half
- A 43rd minute push through Golden Hawk defenders resulted in a try for Ryder Heaney-Corns, giving the Vikes a 24-12 lead.
- Winding through the onslaught of attacking defenders, Hager made his way down field with the ball to touch it down between the posts in the 48th minute for the try. Adding his third convert of the day, Hager pushed the Vikes' lead to 29-12.
- A tap-and-go from Hager with no time remaining in the game cushioned the win for the Vikes, 36-12.
WORTH NOTING
- Hager has now scored 24 points for the Vikes over two matches at the CUMRCs.
- Rikey-Krindle has recorded a try in each of the Vikes' two matches this tournament.
- The Vikes improve to 6-5 on the fall 2022 season with the win.
