Vikes fend off Cougars to claim series win

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's basketball team held off Mount Royal University, 75-70, Dec. 3 inside CARSA Performance Gym to round out the 2022 portion of their Canada West schedule.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Opening the game with 3-for-3 shooting from the field, Kate Johnson recorded six of the Vikes' first eight points for an 8-2 UVic lead with 7:21 to play in the first frame.
  • Brooklyn Walbaum's first three of the game put the Vikes ahead, 23-14 at the end of the first quarter.
  • A 5-0 run for Mount Royal over the final two minutes of the second narrowed the Vikes' lead to 35-32 at the half.
  • The Vikes maintained the lead during the third quarter, with a three from Walbaum in the final minute giving Victoria a 56-50 advantage through 30 minutes of play.
  • Mount Royal pulled even with the Vikes with 40 seconds to play, tying the game at 69 all.
  • Going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the final 30 seconds, a pair of free throws from Ashlyn Day and four from Johnson closed out the win for the Vikes, 75-70.
WORTH NOTING
  • Johnson led the Vikes with 24 points in the win, adding five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
  • Mimi Sigue recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Abigail Becker added a double-double with a 13-point, 10-rebound showing.
  • The two wins over Mount Royal mark the Vikes' first series win of the season.
  • Victoria moves to 4-6 with the win, while the Cougars fall to 3-5 with the loss.
