Vikes down UBCO to open road swing

Kelowna, B.C. – Improving its win streak to 15 games, the University of Victoria men's basketball team opened the final weekend of Canada West regular season action with a 99-71 win over UBC Okanagan, Feb. 24.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 22, UBCO 17
  • Quick, back-and-forth scoring to open the game, the Vikes took a 14-10 lead over the first five minutes of play.
  • A free throw by the Heat brought the home side within three, 14-11.
  • UBCO would stay three points behind until a bucket from Justin McChesney in the final minute gave UVic a five point lead, 22-17, at the end of the first.
2nd Quarter – UVic 41, UBCO 30
  • Five points from a Matthew Ellis jumper and Aaron Tesfagiorgis three put Victoria ahead by 10, 27-17, with eight and a half minutes to play. Seconds later, a pair of free throws from Diego Maffia made it a 29-17 game in UVic's favour.
  • Keeping the Heat off the board for nearly five minutes, a three from the home side would end their scoring drought, making the score 34-20 with 5:02 until halftime.
  • Maintaining distance, Victoria ended the first half with a 41-30 lead. 
3rd Quarter – UVic 73, UBCO 45
  • Five-straight points from Scott Kellum opened the third, with a pair of free throws and a three giving the Vikes a 46-30 lead with 8:15 to play.
  • Continue to widen the gap, a layup from Ethan Boag put UVic ahead by 20, 60-40, with just over three minutes to go in the third.
  • Outscoring UBCO 13-5 in the final five minutes, the Vikes completed 30 minutes of play with a 73-45 lead. 
4th Quarter – UVic 99, UBCO 71
  • UBCO began to push back to open the fourth, going on a 10-3 run to make the score 76-55 with under eight minutes to play.
  • However, the Vikes would end the Heat's comeback efforts and close out the game, claiming a 99-71 win.
 
WORTH NOTING
  • With the win, the Vikes improve to 16-1 overall, and claim the series sweep over the Heat with a 3-0 record.
  • Kellum led the Vikes with 20 points, two rebounds, and four assists in the win.
  • Maffia recorded a double-double, tallying 16 points and 10 assists.
  • Dominick Oliveri registered a team-high 12 rebounds, and added four points, two steals and one assist for UVic.

The Vikes close out the Canada West regular season at UNBC, Feb. 26. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
