Prince George, B.C. - Finishing the Canada West regular season schedule, the University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated the University of Northern British Columbia, 89-69, for the program's 16th-straight win, Feb. 26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 30, UNBC 14
- The Timberwolves would be the first on the board, scoring the first four points of the contest for the 4-0 lead. However, Scott Kellum drained a three and followed with a jumper to push the Vikes in front, 5-4, with seven minutes to go.
- Beginning to distance themselves from the home side, Justin McChesney put the Vikes ahead by 10, 22-12, with 1:45 to play.
- Opening the game on 12-for-20 (60%) shooting, the Vikes led the Timberwolves 30-14 at the end of the first quarter.
2nd Quarter – UVic 45, UNBC 30
- Keeping pace over the quarter, UVic and UNBC went basket-for-basket throughout the second quarter.
- UNBC outscored the Vikes by one, 16-15, in the second, but the Vikes remained in front, 45-30, at the half.
3rd Quarter – UVic 70, UNBC 55
- Growing their lead to 20 over the first three minutes of play, a Diego Maffia three buttoned up at 7-0 Vikes run for the 54-34 lead with just over seven minutes on the clock.
- Regaining some ground, the Timberwolves brought the Vikes' lead down to 13, 68-55, with under a minute left.
- Sergio Pereira would put the final points on the board, and keep the Vikes' lead at 15, 70-55, at the end of the third quarter.
4th Quarter – UVic 89, UNBC 69
- Back-and-forth in the fourth quarter, the Vikes maintained a lead between 14 and 16 points over the first five minutes of play.
- Putting together a 10-0 run, back-to-back three's from Kellum, followed by consecutive two's from Trent Monkman, pushed the Vikes' lead to 24, 88-64, with two minutes left in the game.
- With the Timberwolves unable to overcome the deficit, the Vikes ended the Canada West regular season with a 89-69 win over UNBC.
WORTH NOTING
- The Vikes end the 2021-22 Canada West regular season with a 17-1 record, and finish on a 16-game win streak.
- The 17 Canada West wins are the most for the Vikes since the 19-win 2013-14 season.
- All 11 members of the Vikes that played in today's game scored points, with Kellum leading the way with 22. Kellum went 3-for-4 from three in the win, and added a team-high seven rebounds along with two assists.
- Monkman added the only other double-digit scoring performance for UVic, tallying 15 points. He added a team-high five assists to go along with four rebounds and two steals in the win.Â
