Vikes end regular season with win over UNBC

Prince George, B.C. - Closing out the 2021-22 Canada West regular season, the University of Victoria women's basketball team defeated the University of Northern British Columbia, 75-68, Feb. 26 at Northern Sport Centre.

HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter – UVic 24, UNBC 22
  • The Timberwolves grabbed a quick, 6-0 lead, which was cut to three by the Vikes on a free throw from Mimi Sigue and jumper from Ashlyn Day.
  • Back-to-back three's from Calli McMillan gave UVic its first lead of the day, 10-8, with just over five minutes to go in the opening frame.
  • After holding a four-point advantage for four straight minutes, UNBC came back to tie the game at 20 with 50 seconds to play.
  • Four points via free throws from McMillan and Day gave UVic a 24-22 advantage at the end of the first.
2nd Quarter – UVic 43, UNBC 40
  • Going basket-for-basket to open the second, UNBC went on to produce an 8-0 run to take a 35-28 lead with five minutes to play.
  • Four-straight points from Aleah Ashlee brought it back to a three-point game, 35-32 with just under four minutes to go.
  • Meike Boerstra pulled the Vikes within one, 35-34, with just over two minutes to play, but an immediate response from UNBC by way of three-pointer would bring the home side's lead back to four, 38-34.
  • The Vikes were able to make some stops and regain the lead, 42-40 on a three from Day with 30 seconds remaining.
  • A free throw from McMillan gave the Vikes a three-point edge at the half, 43-40.
3rd Quarter – UVic 63, UNBC 56
  • Continuing to add to their lead to open the second half, a jumper from Karsen Look gave the Vikes a 10-point lead, 51-41, with 5:50 left in the third.
  • A bucket from Boerstra gave UVic its largest lead of the game, 57-43, with just over three and a half minutes to go.
  • Getting some push back from the Timberwolves, UNBC cut the Vikes' lead to seven, 60-53, with under a minute left in the quarter.
  • The Timberwolves would tack on one more basket to make it a 63-56 game in favour of the Vikes after the third quarter.
4th Quarter –UVic 75, UNBC 68
  • A defensive battle to open the final 10 minutes of play, both sides began without baskets for the first three minutes. However, a jumper from Sigue with 6:53 to go ended the Vikes' scoring drought, bringing the score to 65-56 for UVic.
  • Once again building out its lead, the Vikes matched its largest lead of the game, 73-59, on a Look two-pointer with just over three minutes to play.
  • A 9-2 run from UNBC halved Victoria's lead to 75-68 with 45 seconds left.
  • Holding it down to close out the game, the Vikes came away with the 75-68 win to close the Canada West regular season.
WORTH NOTING
  • The Vikes finish the Canada West season with an 11-7 record, and ended with a two-game win streak. 
  • Day tallied 18 points in the win, adding four assists and three rebounds. McMillan finished right behind with 16 points, four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
  • Sigue added a 14-point effort in the win, also grabbing seven rebounds.
  • Ashlee recorded a team-high nine rebounds for the Vikes, adding nine points and one steal in the final game.

The Vikes await seeding for the Canada West playoff tournament, set to take place March 4-6 in Calgary, Alta.
