Day 1 Recap
Quebec City, Que. – The University of Victoria swimming teams closed out the second day of the U SPORTS Swimming Championships with one medal and four new school records, March 25.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Picking up his second school record of the meet, Padric Mckervill clocked in at 24.56 in the 50 fly for the new Vikes record. Earlier in the season, Mckervill matched Alec Page's record time of 24.80, set Jan. 25, 2013. Today's performance tied for 14th and secured a place in the B Finals.
- Claiming her second A Final appearance in as many days, Sophie Tarrant's 2:30.17 in the 200 breast was good for third overall in the prelims.
- Securing her A Final debut, Sophia Brunoro took eighth in the 200 fly prelims with a time of 2:20.13.
- In all, the Vikes secured 17 swims across the A, B, and C Finals after the morning prelims.
- Bringing home the first medal of the meet for the Vikes, Tarrant claimed bronze and set a new school record in the 200 breast, dropping nearly three seconds off her prelim time to touch the wall in 2:27.44. Her time also bested UVic Sports Hall of Fame member Christin Petelski's school record time of 2:27.89, which had been in place since Jan. 1, 1998.
- Taking seventh in the 200 fly A Final, Brunoro came away with a time of 2:20.11 to improve one spot from her eighth-place prelims finish.
- Shaving time off the school record he set in the prelims, Mckervill won the 50 fly B Finals with a time of 24.17, down from 24.56 in the prelims. Adding a second B Final win, Mckervill clocked in at 1:59.38 to win the 200 fly B Final.
- Setting his second Vikes record of the meet, Jacob Rambo swam 54.48 in the 100 back to dethrone Buzz Mallender's time of 54.70 set Feb. 21, 2019. Rambo's time was good for second in the B Final.
- Adding another Vikes win in the B Finals, Lauren Crisp took the top spot in the 100 back B Final with a time of 1:01.43.
- The Vikes also picked up three C Final wins with Cameron Hill in the 50 fly (28.03), Elijah Agostinelli Stull in the 400 free (3:53.55), and Ethan Hemeon in the 200 breast (2:12.99).
- UVic's men's relay team set a new school record for the second-straight night, this time in the 4x200 free relay. Finishing fifth overall with a time of 7:21.38, Agostinelli Stull, Ricky Millns, Rambo and William Risk unseated the previous Vikes record time of 7:22.17 set Feb. 21, 2013.
THOUGHTS FROM THE COACHING STAFF
"Some of the swimmers struggled to get to their best this morning, still being tired from day one. However, tonight's finals were even more exciting than last night. We had some strong morning swims, but were much stronger in the finals."
SWIMMERS OF THE DAY
Swimmer of the Day: Ethan Hemeon
"It's definitely hard not to give Swimmer of the Day to
Sophie Tarrant, dropping three seconds off her time, winning her first U SPORTS medal, and breaking the oldest standing Vikes record," began coach
Ryan Clouston. "But Swimmer of the Day goes to
Ethan Hemeon for a revolutionary swim in the 200 breast, taking four seconds off on the day and would have placed well in the A Final."
Honourable Mentions: Lauren Crisp,
Jacob Rambo,
Padric Mckervill,
Drew Edwards, and
William Risk
"Many honourable mentions,
Lauren Crisp with her best 100 back,
Jacob Rambo with the Vikes record and great relay that also set a Vikes record,
Padric Mckervill with a big personal best and Vikes record in the 50 fly and his first time under 2:00 in the 200 fly,
Drew Edwards with his first time under four minutes in the 400 free, and
William Risk took seven seconds off his 400 free today," noted Clouston. "We could go on and on with honourable mentions."
