Kelowna, B.C. – Opening the 2022 season with a draw, the University of Victoria men's soccer team battled UBC Okanagan to a 1-1 finish, Aug. 26 at Nonis Sports Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
52nd Minute – UVic 1, UBCO 0
- After missing the 2021 season with an Achilles injury, Nick Park wasted no time in getting back to the scoring column. Connecting on a pass from Javier Sagaste inside the six-yard box, Park sent the ball to the back of the net to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead.
72nd Minute – UVic 1, UBCO 1
- Finding a response, the Heat chipped a shot to the top of the net for the equalizer.
WORTH NOTING
- Dusan Mitrovic nearly got things started for the Vikes in the 12th minute, being taken down in the box and earning a penalty kick. However, the UBCO goalkeeper was able to get in front of it to keep the game scoreless.
- The Heat were awarded a PK of their own on the next possession, but Harjot Nijjar was able to deflect the shot and keep the game at 0-0.
- As even as could be at the half, both sides had five shots, three shots on goal, two saves, and one corner following the first 45 minutes of play.
- At full time, the Vikes finished the night with the 11-7 advantage in shots taken and 6-5 edge in shots on goal.
- Nijjar posted three saves in his first start of the season.
- Park recorded a game-high three shots in the draw, two of which were on target.
- Both the Vikes and the Heat hold records of 0-0-1 after the first game of the season.
