Winnipeg, Man. – Earning its first win of the season, the University of Victoria women's soccer team shutout the University of Winnipeg, 2-0, at Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex, Sept. 17.
HOW IT HAPPENED
47th Minute – UVic 1, WPG 0
- Breaking through early in the second half, Ruby Nicholas gave the Vikes the lead with her second goal of the season.
87th Minute – UVic 2, WPG 0
- Awarded a corner kick, the Vikes opted for a short kick to Emma Skalik waiting on the outside corner of the box. From there, Skalik launched the ball in the box to Tess Vande Vegte, who headed the ball into the net for her first goal of the season.
WORTH NOTING
- The victory marks the first of the season for the Vikes, who move to 1-4-1 with the win. Winnipeg falls to 0-4-0 with the loss.
- Both Nicholas and Vande Vegte's goals were the second of their respective careers. Nicholas' also marked her second of the season, while Vande Vegte's was her first of the year.
- The win marked the second shutout of the season for Kayley Lidstone and the Vikes' defence. Lidstone tallied three saves in the win.
- Emma Skalik finished with four shots, three of which were on frame, to lead the Vikes. Trinity Kettyls and Sophie Fingarson were close behind, each recording two shots on goal.
- The Vikes out-shot the Wesmen 17-4 in 90 minutes, finishing with a 12-3 edge in shots on goal.
- UVic's 17 shots and 12 on frame mark the most in a single game so far in 2022 for the Vikes. In addition, the four Winnipeg shots mark the fewest allowed to an opponent this season.
- Victoria did not concede a corner kick to Winnipeg, finishing with the 11-0 advantage.
- The Vikes remain unbeaten against the Wesmen since 2012, moving to 4-0-1 in the last five meetings between the two sides.
