Duncan, B.C. – Opening a two-game series against the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria field hockey team tied, 1-1, but fell in the shootout, 3-2, Sept. 24 at Cowichan Sportsplex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
2nd Quarter – UVic 1, UBC 0
- Getting on the board in the 21st minute, Nora Struchtrup swiped the ball from the UBC defenders, taking the UBC keeper one-on-one. Slipping the ball past the oncoming outstretched foot, Struchtrup sent a slow roller to the back right of the net for the Vikes lead.
3rd Quarter – UVic 1, UBC 1
- A penalty corner by the Thunderbirds in the 39th minute gave UBC the equalizer.
Shootout - UBC 3, UVic 2
- The first two players for each side missed, keeping it 0-0.
- Struchtrup and Erin Dawson scored for the Vikes in the third and fourth rounds, respectively.
- UBC scored in final round to take the shootout, 3-2.
WORTH NOTING
- Struchtrup's goal marked her fifth of the season.
- UVic earned at least two corners per quarter, but were unable to convert on any of them.
- The game marked the first shootout test for Daya Shields as a Vike. She made two saves in the shootout as well as a few throughout the game.
- The Vikes and Thunderbirds both move to 2-0-1 on the year, while UBC collects the bonus point in the standings for the shootout win.
