VICTORIA – Recording at least 30 points in each of the four quarters, the University of Victoria men's basketball team handled the University of Northern British Columbia, 129-89, Jan. 14 inside CARSA Performance Gym to take the series win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UNBC fought to an early 11-2 lead, but the Vikes would battle back to take their first lead of the game, 19-18, on a Dominick Oliveri layup with 4:29 to go in the first quarter.
- A pair of free throws from Trent Monkman brought the score to 31-30 in favour of the Vikes at the end of the first.
- Starting to pull away in the second quarter, the Vikes took a 10-point lead, 60-50, on a jumper from Diego Maffia with 2:14 until the end of the half.
- Victoria held the 65-52 advantage through 20 minutes of play.
- A quick 7-0 run from the Vikes by way of Maffia three, Renoldo Robinson jumper and Elias Ralph layup gave Victoria a 20-point cushion, 75-55, with 7:55 to play in the third.
- Continuing to extend their lead, the Vikes finished the third quarter in front by a score of 97-63.
- Posting back-to-back 32-point quarters, the Vikes ran away with the 129-89 win.
WORTH NOTING
- The 129 points scored mark a season-high for the Vikes, besting the previous season-high of 114 points set Dec. 2, 2022 against Mount Royal.
- Maffia led the Vikes with 34 points, highlighted by six three-pointers, adding five assists and three rebounds in the win. The six made three's tie for third-most in a single Canada West game this season. Maffia also recorded six made three's Nov. 12, 2022 against Winnipeg.
- Oliveri neared a triple-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and a career-high nine assists in 24 minutes of play for the Vikes.
- Victoria improves to 12-2 on the year with the win, while UNBC drops to 5-7 with the loss.
