Kamloops, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated Thompson Rivers University, 96-59, Jan. 27 at the Tournament Capital Centre to open the weekend series.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading baskets to open the game, a Renoldo Robinson layup with 7:47 to play gave the Vikes their first lead of the night, 8-7, in the first quarter.
- Claiming the last six points of the first quarter, a Sergio Pereira dunk, Elias Ralph jumper and pair of free throws from Ethan Boag put the Vikes ahead, 25-19 after one quarter of play.
- Boag registered the first nine points of the second quarter for Victoria, putting the Vikes ahead 34-27 with 6:09 until halftime.
- A Trent Monkman free throw put the final point of the first half on the board, giving UVic a 49-33 advantage heading into the halftime break.
- Outscoring TRU 19-11 in third quarter, the Vikes took a 68-44 lead into the final frame.
- Izzy Helman's 20th point of the night with nine seconds left sealed the win for the Vikes, 96-59.
WORTH NOTING
- Diego Maffia led the Vikes with a 22-point scoring night in the win, also contributing six rebounds and three assists for the Vikes.
- Helman recorded a season-high 20 points for the Vikes, adding two rebounds, one assist and one steal in 31 minutes of play.
- Boag and Robinson rounded out the Vikes' four double-digit scoring performances with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
- Dominick Oliveri led the Vikes on the boards with 11. Pereira tied his season-high with nine rebounds.
- The Vikes improve to 13-2 with the win, while the WolfPack drop to 5-10 with the loss.
