Regina, Sask. – A last-minute push by the University of Victoria men's basketball team propelled the Vikes past the University of Regina, 82-78, Jan. 6 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes took a 10-4 lead over the first five minutes of play before Regina fought back to take a 15-14 lead with 2:43 to go in the opening 10 minutes of play.
- A free throw from Renoldo Robinson brought the Vikes within one, 19-18, at the end of the first quarter.
- The Cougars remained in front throughout the second frame, holding a 46-40 lead through 20 minutes of play.
- The Vikes ended the third quarter on a 7-0 run with a Robinson layup, Ethan Boag three and pair of free throws from Robinson to make it a 63-54 game in favour of Regina.
- A 13-3 Vikes run capped by a Diego Maffia three pulled UVic within four, 73-69, with 3:19 to go in the fourth.
- Maffia's fourth successful three-pointer of the night tied the game, 77-77, forcing a Regina timeout with 1:23 remaining.
- A layup from Trent Monkman and three free throws from Maffia in the final 45 seconds sealed the win for the Vikes, 82-78.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia led Victoria with 28 points, adding a team-high five assists and team-leading five steals.
- Robinson tied his season-high with 24 points in the win, also tallying seven rebounds and one steal in the win.
- Dominick Oliveri tied the game-high with 14 rebounds, also contributing eight points, three assists and one steal in 34 minutes of play for the Vikes.
- The Vikes improve to 9-2 on the season while the Cougars move to 5-4.
