Regina, Sask. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team claimed the weekend series win over the University of Regina with a 91-67 victory, Jan. 7, at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Renoldo Robinson grabbed the first five points of the game, making the score 5-0 for the Vikes with 8:41 to go in the opening quarter.
- A 9-0 Vikes run resulted in a 17-10 Victoria lead at the halfway point of the first. The Vikes continued to lead, 30-24, at the end of the first quarter.
- Using a 17-4 run over six minutes capped by an Izzy Helman three, the Vikes built a 47-33 lead with 2:30 until the half.
- Maintaining a double-digit lead after 20 minutes of play, the Vikes entered halftime up, 52-41.
- Opening the third quarter on a 12-0 run from a Robinson jumper, Helman three, two Diego Maffia layups and an Elias Ralph three, the Vikes took a 64-41 lead with 7:20 remaining.
- Holding the Cougars to just nine points in the third quarter, the Vikes led 72-50 after 30 minutes of play.
- Maintaining a steady lead to the finish, the Vikes came away with the 91-67 win.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia led the Vikes with 25 points, adding eight rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block in the win.
- Robinson recorded 18 points for the Vikes, also notching a team-high five steals.
- Ralph added a double-digit scoring performance with 15 points, adding seven rebounds, two assists, two steals, and a team-high two blocks to his stat line.
- The Vikes hold a 10-2 record after the weekend series win, while the Cougars pull even at 5-5 with the loss.
