VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team took down the previously undefeated University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 2-0, Oct. 1 at Centennial Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UBC came out firing, forcing Kayley Lidstone to make several saves in the first 25 minutes to keep the game scorelss.
- Taking the lead in the 26th minute, Tannis McKay's serve in connected perfectly with Sophie Murphy's head, sending the ball to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead.
- Despite keeping the Thunderbirds out of the goal for the remaining time, Erin Jensen added an insurance goal for the Vikes in the 90th minute, firing her shot from the top of the box to the back of the net to seal the Vikes' win, 2-0.
WORTH NOTING
- Lidstone recorded eight saves in the win, marking her second shutout of the weekend. The Vikes have shutout their opponents in each of their last four matches.
- The Vikes claim their first win over UBC since the 2019 season, a 3-1 win in Vancouver, Oct. 12. The Vikes last shutout the Thunderbirds Sept. 2, 2017, recording a 1-0 win at Centennial Stadium.
- Murphy's goal marked the first of her Vikes career, while Jensen recorded her fifth of the season.
- The Vikes sit at 6-3-2 on the season with the win, while UBC is now 9-1-0 with their first loss of the season.
