VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team advanced to the Canada West quarterfinals after playing the University of the Fraser Valley to a 1-1 (4-3 PK) result, Oct. 21 at Centennial Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Through 90 minutes of play, neither team found the back of the net, forcing overtime.
- Into stoppage time of the first overtime period, Adrianna Hilton sent a high-arcing pass straight to Emma Skalik's head just outside of the six-yard box. Skalik directed the ball to the back of the net to give the Vikes the 1-0 lead in the 105th minute.
- With less than a minute to play in the final overtime period, UFV used a free kick to equalize, 1-1, and force penalty kicks.
- Kayley Lidstone stopped the first Cascades' shot of penalty kicks, and was followed by a make by Erin Jensen to give the Vikes a 1-0 lead. A successful attempt for the Cascades and goal for Brianne McLeish kept the Vikes in front, 2-1, at the halfway point.
- Two-straight saves by Lidstone and a goal from Tannis McKay sealed the 3-1 penalty kick victory to advance the Vikes to the next round of the playoffs.
