Edmonton, Alta. – Coming in as the fourth seed in the pacific division, the University of Victoria women's soccer team took down top prairie seed MacEwan University, 2-0, Oct. 28 at Clareview Field to punch their ticket to the Canada West Final Four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After the first few chances for the Vikes didn't go their way, Erin Jensen found an open lane in the 27th minute, sending a low shot to the inside right post to put the Vikes in front, 1-0.
- Doubling the lead in the second half, a bounce off Ruby Nicholas went right to Jensen already breaking away, who buried the ball in the back of the net to seal the win for the Vikes, 2-0.
- Shutting out the Griffins for the remainder of the game, the Vikes came away with the quarterfinal victory, handing MacEwan their first loss at home in 2023.
WORTH NOTING
- Jensen has scored for the Vikes in three of the last four matches. She scored her eighth and ninth goals of the year in the win.
- Nicholas' assist on Jensen's second goal marked her 10th of the season.
- The Vikes and Griffins faced off in the 2019 Canada West quarterfinals but flipped the script in 2023, as the Griffins came away victorious with a 1-0 win Oct. 27, 2019.
- Victoria will appear in their first Canada West Final Four since the 2017 season.
- Victoria out-shot MacEwan 14-7 overall and 7-3 in shots on target.
- The Vikes sit at 10-4-2 on the year after two postseason wins, while the Griffins' season comes to a close at 10-3-2.
