VICTORIA - The University of Victoria field hockey team won its fifth-straight Canada West conference title, Oct. 22 at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field following a 1-0 win over the University of British Columbia.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Drawing UBC's goalkeeper to the left side of the net, Jaden Dawson sent the ball to the back right corner for the game-winning goal in the 25th minute.
- Though the Thunderbirds were awarded a penalty corner in the final 20 seconds of the game, the Vikes' defence held on to clear the ball away and seal the win for the Vikes, 1-0.
WORTH NOTING
- Dawson's goal marked her first of the year.
- The Vikes finished the 2023 season on a four-game shutout streak, going 3-0-1 over the final four games while allowing zero goals to their opponents.
- The conference title marks the fifth-straight and 22nd overall for the Vikes field hockey program. Though part of several championship teams as an assistant coach for Victoria, the conference title was the first for UVic under first-year head coach Krista Thompson.
- Victoria closes the Canada West season at 4-1-3 overall, while UBC ends the year with a record of 3-4-1.
