Abbotsford, B.C. – The University of Victoria men's basketball team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley, 92-76, Nov. 10 at the UFV Athletic Centre.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Steadily increasing their lead over the first 10 minutes of play, the Vikes took their first 10-point lead of the night, 12-2, at the halfway point of the opening frame.
- An Aaron Tesfagiorgis three and Sergio Pereira put-back in the final minute gave the Vikes a 26-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Though the Cascades got the first bucket of the second quarter, the Vikes went on a 15-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 41-12 lead with seven minutes until halftime.
- Holding the Cascades at a distance, the Vikes took a 51-25 lead into the halftime break.
- Victoria recorded seven points via a Diego Maffia three-pointer, pair of free throws from Renoldo Robinson and Shadynn Smid jumper over the first five minutes of the third, maintaining a 25-point lead, 58-33 over UFV.
- Getting a bucket from Ryan Gallagher and a three from Griffin Arnatt in the final minute gave the Vikes a 74-46 advantage after 30 minutes of action.
- Gallagher's three to open the fourth quarter gave the Vikes their largest lead of the night, 77-46, with 9:28 to play.
- Though the Cascades would make a push and ultimately out-score UVic in the final frame, 30-18, the early lead built by Victoria gave the Vikes a 92-76 win at the final buzzer.
WORTH NOTING
- Maffia led the Vikes with 26 points, adding five rebounds, two steals and one assist to his 26 minutes without a turnover.
- Elias Ralph was a rebound shy of a double-double after his 13-point, nine-rebound night.
- Robinson posted team-highs in steals (3) and assists (2) in the win, adding 12 points in 20 minutes on the floor.
- The Vikes improve to 2-1 on the year with the win, while the Cascades move to 1-2.
