Burnaby, B.C. – The University of Victoria women's rowing team successfully defended their 2022 national championship title with a first-place finish at the 2023 Canadian University Rowing Championships, Nov. 11-12 on Burnaby Lake.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Finishing sixth during the lightweight 2x time trials to claim the final spot in the A Final, the duo of Sophia Regosa and Paige Letham finished in bronze medal position with a time of 7:53.629 to medal for the Vikes.
- Nicole Cusack and Mikaela Holthuis took second in both the time trials and A Final of the 2- races, winning silver with a time of 7:37.308.
- Grabbing silver in the lightweight 4+, the boat of Helen Ross, Regosa, Letham, Elena Masyte, and Sai Sai Faubert clocked in at 7:30.491 for the second-place finish.
- Improving three places from her fifth-place time trials showing, Maggie Hemphill claimed 1x silver with a time of 8:14.163 in the A Final.
- Closing out the championship with a gold medal performance, the 8+ team of Sofie Hof, Danica Ariano, Hemphill, Cusack, Holthuis, Belén Reed, Gabby Kieser, Sarah Stormont, and Kaliya Javra won the race with a time of 6:31.062.
- Vikes head coach Jane Gumley was named the Coach of the Year for the third-straight year after guiding the Vikes to back-to-back national championships.
- The national title is the 13th overall for the Vikes women's rowing program, and second under Gumley.
