Field hockey begins U SPORTS title defence at Toronto

VICTORIA - Coming off the program's fifth-straight Canada West championship title, the University of Victoria women's field hockey team heads to OUA Champion University of Toronto to take on the Varsity Blues in a best-of-three series for the 2023 U SPORTS Championships, Nov. 3-5.

NEWS & NOTES
  • The Vikes finished the 2023 Canada West season with a 4-1-3 record, capturing the program's fifth-straight conference title. The Vikes were also most recently ranked second in the final U SPORTS Top 10 poll of the season.
  • The Varsity Blues claimed the OUA title after shootout wins over Waterloo and York, Oct. 21 and 28. Toronto holds a 10-2 record on the year entering the national championships.
  • Victoria and Toronto will meet at the U SPORTS Championships for the second time in three years, as the Vikes claimed the 2021 U SPORTS crown against the Varsity Blues in Toronto in 2021.
  • Three Vikes earned major U SPORTS awards ahead of the championships: U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Rebecca Stone, and U SPORTS All-Canadians Libby Hogg and Anni Kleinschmidt. 
  • Chloe Langkammer and Melanie Robertson lead the Vikes with three goals each on the year, while Brooke Furtado, Amanda Adams, Nora Struchtrup and Hogg each have two goals through eight matches.
  • Anais Chace and the Vikes' defence ended the season on a four-game shutout streak, blanking Calgary and UBC two times each to end the year.
  • The Vikes look to defend their 2022 U SPORTS title, which was won in two games against York on Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft field, Nov. 4-5, 2022.
