Vancouver, B.C. – The University of British Columbia posted a 72-52 win over the University of Victoria women's basketball team, Nov. 25 at War Memorial Gym.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Getting in front for the first few minutes of the game, a Mimi Sigue layup followed by jumpers from Makena Anderson and Karis de Paiva kept the Vikes in front, 6-3, through the 6:48 mark in the first quarter.
- UBC controlled the remainder of the first, taking an 18-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.
- A 10-3 Vikes run over the first five minutes of the second quarter, capped by four-straight Abigail Becker free throws, brought the Vikes within one, 21-20, with 4:40 remaining until halftime.
- Though the Thunderbirds regained a five-point lead, a bucket from Becker and steal and fast break layup by Marja Wahl brought Victoria back within one, 25-24, with 3:13 left in the second quarter.
- Scoring 10 points to the Vikes' three in the final three minutes, the Thunderbirds led at the half, 35-27.
- Narrowing the lead to start the third quarter, a Sierra Reisig three and layup and jumper by Becker brought UVic back within five, 39-34, with 6:52 to play in the frame.
- The Thunderbirds built out their lead with an 18-7 scoring advtange over the final near-seven minutes of the third, holding a 57-41 lead over the Vikes after 30 minutes of action.
- Unable to catch UBC in the final frame, the Vikes fell to the Thunderbirds, 72-52.
WORTH NOTING
- Becker led the Vikes with 17 points, adding six rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes on the floor.
- Sigue notched 10 points and a Vikes-high eight rebounds, with one steal on the night.
- Wahl recorded a season-best and game-high four steals for the Vikes, also adding season-highs in points (4) and minutes (18).
- The Vikes drop to 0-6 with the loss, while the Thunderbirds improve to 6-2 with the win.
