Regina, Sask. – The University of Victoria women's basketball team's 2022-23 season came to a close with an 83-66 loss to Trinity Western University, Feb. 17 at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Trading points back-and-forth to open the game, a nine-point Vikes run consisting of a Kate Johnson three and back-to-back three-pointers from Ashlyn Day gave the Vikes an 18-13 lead with 4:07 to play in the opening frame.
- Six-straight points by Trinity Western gave the Spartans a 24-20 lead at the end of the first quarter.
- Trinity Western put the first nine points of the second quarter on the board until an Abigail Becker layup put points up for the Vikes, bringing the score to 33-22 in favour of TWU with 6:42 until halftime.
- A Johnson jumper and Brooke Kendal layup brought the Vikes within six, 36-30, with 2:18 remaining in the quarter.
- The Spartans added seven points to the Vikes' two in the final minutes to hold a 43-32 lead at the half.
- After three quarters of play, the Vikes trailed Trinity Western, 70-44.
- A 7-0 Vikes run made of a Becker layup, pair of free throws by Becker, and Day three brought the score to 78-61 with 1:38 to go in the final quarter.
- Unable to overcome the Spartans' lead, the Vikes fell to Trinity Western, 83-66.
WORTH NOTING
- Day led the Vikes with 28 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal.
- Becker recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, adding three steals and two blocks for the Vikes.
- Johnson rounded out the double-digit point-scorers for Victoria with 11 points, also recording three rebounds, three assists and four steals.
- The Vikes end the season with an overall record of 9-12 in Canada West and postseason play.
