VICTORIA – A gold medal-winning performance highlighted the University of Victoria swimming teams' first day of the U SPORTS Swimming Championships, Feb. 23 at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• Starting the day with a school record, Ricky Millns set a new Vikes record in the 50 free prelims tying for 13th place and besting the previous record of 22.94 with a time of 22.86.
• The Vikes secured three A Final appearances on day one with Lauren Crisp finishing fourth in the women's 100 back prelims with a time of 1:00.97, Padric Mckervill taking seventh in the men's 100 fly prelims at 54.08, and Erin Epp finishing third in the women's 200 IM prelims with a 2:16.22 showing.
• Capturing the gold medal and the Vikes' first medal of the meet, Crisp finished the women's 100 back A Final in a time of 1:03.27 to become a national champion.
• After a fourth-place finish by Epp in the women's 200 IM A Final at 2:20.45, Sophie Tarrant claimed the B Final crown with a time of 2:21.11.
• Maxwell Fang won the men's 50 free C Final with a 23.60 showing.
• Recording top-10 finishes in the finals, Epp and Tarrant finished ninth and 10th in the women's 50 breast B Final with times if 32.81 and 32.99, respectively.
• Jacob Rambo took 10th in the men's 100 back B Final with a time of 58.07.
• As teams, the Vikes hold fifth place on the women's side with 127 points, and sixth on the men's side with 148 points after the first day of action.
