Vikes host Wesmen in search of second-straight Canada West banner

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's basketball team hosts the University of Winnipeg Friday, March 3 at CARSA Performance Gym in the Canada West playoff championship game.

  • Sitting with an overall record of 19-3, the top-seeded Vikes enter the conference final ranked No. 2 in the final U SPORTS Top 10 poll of the season.
  • The Vikes look to defend their 2022 championship title and earn the program's 17th conference championship banner against the Wesmen.
  • Winnipeg holds the third seed in the conference playoffs and holds an overall record of 17-5. Playing for their first Canada West men's basketball title since joining the conference in 2001-02, the Wesmen upset second-seeded Manitoba, 73-70, in semifinals to earn their championship berth.
  • The Vikes and Wesmen faced off early in the 2022-23 season, with Victoria capturing 91-66 and 94-79 wins over Winnipeg, Nov. 11-12, at CARSA Performance Gym.
  • Diego Maffia became the Canada West Player of the Year today, March 2, becoming just the second Vike to earn player of the year accolades since 2000.
  • Three Vikes were named Canada West All-Stars last Friday, Feb. 24, with Maffia earning first-team status, Dominick Oliveri being named to the second team, and Renoldo Robinson earning all-rookie team honours.
  • Maffia leads the Vikes with a 24.4 points per game average while Oliveri leads UVic on the boards with a 12.6 rebounds per game average.
