Vikes announce major award finalists for 2022-23 varsity season

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria is pleased to recognize the finalists for the 2022-23 varsity athletics major awards, which will be announced at the annual Celebration of Champions on April 5 at UVic's Farquhar Auditorium.

The 2022-23 season saw plenty of action, with the Department of Athletics and Recreation hosting three U SPORTS national championships in women's rugby, women's field hockey and swimming. Successes on the national stage raised the Vikes' national championship total to 85, while overall Canada West conference titles increased to 123.

The Celebration of Champions Athletics Awards banquet is a chance to acknowledge and recognize the past season's outstanding team and individual accomplishments both on and off the field of play.

The Robert T. Wallace Shield Award is presented annually to one male and one female outstanding student-athlete in their first year of varsity competition. This year's nominees on the women's side include Erin Epp of women's swimming, Carissa Norsten of women's rugby, and Christina Peet-Williams of women's cross country and track. Men's nominees include Taine Clague of men's rugby, Jaxon Kuchar of men's cross country and track, and Renoldo Robinson of men's basketball.

This year's Athlete of the Year nominees on the men's and women's sides exhibit exceptional athletic achievement over the past season. The men's nominees are Robin Conlan of men's golf, Daniel Damian of men's cross country and track, and Diego Maffia of men's basketball. The women's nominees are Lauren Crisp of women's swimming, Jennifer Erickson of women's cross country and track, Anna Mollenhauer of women's field hockey, and Genevieve Olson of women's rowing.

The Chancellor's Award honours leadership and contribution from a student-athlete towards their team, and this year's nominees include Georgia Ginther of women's cross country and track, Dominick Oliveri of men's basketball, Emma Skalik of women's soccer, Sophie Tarrant of women's swimming and Adam Miller of men's rowing.

The night's most prestigious award, the President's Cup, is awarded to an outstanding fourth or fifth-year student-athlete who demonstrates high scholastic and athletic ability. This year includes four nominees – Lauren Crisp of women's swimming, Jennifer Erickson of women's cross country and track, Anna Mollenhauer of women's field hockey, and Trinity Kettyls of women's soccer.

The Times Colonist Publisher's Award for Community Contributions is presented to individual(s) who has(ve) made an outstanding voluntary contribution to a varsity program. This award will be presented on April 5, at the Celebration of Champions.
