Kamloops, B.C. - A stoppage time goal from the University of Victoria men's soccer team upset the defending U SPORTS national champions Thompson Rivers University, 1-0, in the Vikes' season-opener, Sept. 1 at Hillside Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first half, Victoria received an advantage in the 76th minute when a second yellow card was issued to a TRU player, causing the WolfPack to play the remainder of the match with 10 players.
- Two chances for the WolfPack in the final 10 minutes were sent high and wide, respectively, resulting in the score remaining 0-0 after the end of regulation time.
- Nearly one minute into stoppage time, Remi Barbot kept the ball on the ground and sent it to the back right corner of the net to give the Vikes the 1-0 victory.Â
WORTH NOTING
- Barbot's goal marks his first as a Vike, as well as the first for UVic in 2023.
- Callum Weir recorded his first career shutout in goal during his first start, notching four saves in his first win of the season.
- Thompson Rivers out-shot UVic 8-3 overall and 4-3 in shots on goal, while also finishing with a 2-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.Â
- The Vikes have now won three of their last five season-opening contests.Â
- Victoria drops the WolfPack to 0-3-0 with the win, while the Vikes start the season at 1-0-0.
