Men's soccer conquers Cascades in Sunday match

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's soccer team closed the weekend with a 3-1 win over the University of the Fraser Valley, Sept. 10 at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Receiving a pass from Javier Sagaste near the top of the box, Jimmy Steel dribbled in to take a shot right of the penalty spot, sending it to the back left corner of the net for a 17th minute goal to put the Vikes ahead, 1-0.
  • Opening the second-half scoring, a cross from Jordan McKinty found Aiden Grew on the left line of the six-yard box. Grew used his head to send the ball past the UFV keeper and make it a 2-0 lead for Victoria in the 51st minute.
  • Awarded a penalty kick when Remi Barbot was taken down in the box, Javier Sagaste stepped up to the line and sent it to the shallow right corner for the 3-0 UVic lead in the 88th minute.
  • UFV got on the board via penalty kick of their own three minutes into stoppage time, bringing the final score to 3-1 for the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
  • Steel's goal marked the first of his five-year university career, as well as his first as a Vike.

  • UVic out-shot UFV 12-6, also holding a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. Fraser Valley finished with a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The Vikes remain unbeaten at 3-0-1 with the win, while the Cascades fall to 1-3-0 after four games.
