Edmonton, Alta. - The previously 6-0-0 MacEwan University Griffins were handed their first draw of 2023 by the University of Victoria women's soccer team, who came back to secure a point on the road with a 1-1 tie at Clarke Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A seven-save first half from goalkeeper Kayley Lidstone allowed the game to go into halftime scoreless.
- The Griffins struck first, scoring in the 50th minute to take a 1-0 lead.
- Not three minutes later did Ruby Nicholas seize her moment, intercepting a pass from the MacEwan defenders and breaking away, shooting the ball from just above the penalty spot and sending it past the Griffins keeper for the equalizer, 1-1.
- Keeping MacEwan off the board for the remainder of the match, the Vikes came away with a point after the final score of 1-1.
WORTH NOTING
- Lidstone finished with nine saves in the draw.
- Nicholas scored her fourth goal of the season for the Vikes, and now leads the team with nine points, which also ties for third in the conference.Â
- The Griffins finished with a 14-3 total shots advantage and 10-2 lead in shots on goal. The Vikes had a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.Â
- UVic moves to 2-3-2 on the year, while MacEwan remains unbeaten at 6-0-1 after the draw.Â
