VICTORIA - The University of Victoria men's soccer team used a two-goal second half to defeat MacEwan University, 3-2, Sept. 22 at Centennial Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Vikes opened the scoring in the 13th minute, with Kaelan Cooke finding Javier Sagaste. Sagaste kept the ball on the ground, sending it to the back left corner of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead in the 13th minute.
- MacEwan scored in the 26th minute to tie the game, and in the 50th minute to take a 2-1 lead.
- Matthew Pearse equalized in the 70th minute, receiving a cross from Jordan Mckinty and slipping it past the goalkeeper to bring the score to 2-2.
- Eight minutes later, Pearse netted the game-winner, taking the pass from Remi Barbot to the centre of the box and drilling it past the Griffins' goalkeeper to seal the Vikes' win, 3-2.
WORTH NOTING
- Pearse's goals marked his second and third of the season, while Cooke recorded his first point as a Vike with the assist on Sagaste's goal.
- The win marked the first time this season the Vikes have come back from a goal deficit to win. Victoria has come back to tie twice this season (vs. Trinity Western, Sept. 8 and at Saskatchewan, Sept. 17).
- The Vikes edged the Griffins in total shots, 11-8, but MacEwan finished with the advantage in shots on goal, 7-5.
- Victoria improves to 4-1-2 with the win, while MacEwan falls to 2-4 with the loss.
