Men's soccer completes six-point weekend with win over Dinos

VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's soccer team shutout the University of Calgary, 3-0, Sept. 23 at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A cross by Javier Sagaste found a waiting Kaelan Cooke's head inside the six-yard box, allowing Cooke to head it to the back of the net for the 1-0 Vikes lead in the 22nd minute.
  • Five minutes later, Yassin Guitouni's shot was saved by the Dinos goalkeeper, but the rebound went straight to the foot of Aiden Grew, who sent it over the line to put UVic ahead, 2-0.
  • In the second half, Sagaste fed the ball from the top right side of the box to Grew waiting on the left side of the six-yard box, resulting in Grew's second goal of the night with a tap-in in the 54th minute to finalize the score at 3-0 in favour of the Vikes.
WORTH NOTING
  • Cooke scored his first goal as a Vike, and along with his assist against MacEwan, registered a two-point weekend for UVic.
  • Callum Weir and the Vikes' defence recorded their third clean sheet of the season, with Weir tallying four saves in the win.
  • Sagaste's two assists brings his total to three on the season, tied with Jordan Mckinty for most on the team.
  • The Vikes improve to 5-1-2 after the six-point weekend, while Calgary falls to 1-5-2 with the loss.
