Women's soccer records second-straight shutout with win over Winnipeg

VICTORIA - The University of Victoria women's soccer team recorded its second-straight shutout with a 5-0 win over the University of Winnipeg, Sept. 24 at Centennial Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A cross from Sophie Murphy went off of Ruby Nicholas' head and found the foot of Emma Skalik, who tapped the ball over the line for the 1-0 Vikes lead in the eighth minute.
  • Just before halftime, a Vikes corner kick went to Kara Skirzyk, who's header attempt went off the crossbar but straight to Skalik, who fired her shot to the back of the net to put UVic ahead, 2-0 in the 44th minute.
  • Less than a minute into the second half, the Vikes struck again. Skalik served the ball from the top of the box to Abby McDonald just outside the six-yard box, who launched a high shot over the outstretched Winnipeg keeper's hand for the 3-0 Vikes lead in the 46th minute.
  • A long cross from Murphy missed its initial Vikes target in the box, but found McDonald on the left side instead. McDonald kept the ball on the ground and sent it to the back right of the goal to put Victoria up 4-0 in the 58th minute.
  • The final goal of the day came on a corner opportunity for the Vikes, with Skalik's kick finding Skirzyk for the header and bringing the final score to 5-0.
WORTH NOTING
  • Skalik now leads the Vikes with six goals on the season after her two-goal performance. Skalik tallied four points in the win from two goals and two assists.
