VICTORIA – The University of Victoria men's soccer team shutout the University of Northern British Columbia, claiming their second 2-0 win in as many nights, Sept. 30 at Centennial Stadium.
NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
- Today, Sept. 30, 2023, marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
- Also known as Orange Shirt Day, it is a national movement that brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the spirit of hope and reconciliation, and honours former residential school students, their families and communities.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A Jimmy Steel pass made its way to Yassin Guitouni, who dribbled past his defenders to launch a shot from the left side of the box to the back right of the net and put the Vikes ahead, 1-0, in the 30th minute.
- Adding an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, Javier Sagaste's cross found Matthew Pearse's head, resulting in the ball landing in the back of the net to seal the Vikes' win, 2-0.
WORTH NOTING
- Guitouni's goal marked his second of the season, while Pearse's was his fourth of the year.
- Callum Weir registered three saves in the shutout, marking the Vikes' third-straight.
- UVic out-shot UNBC 17-8 overall and 9-3 in shots on goal.
- The Vikes finish the weekend at 7-1-2 overall, while the Timberwolves fall to 2-7-2.
