VICTORIA – A shutout from the University of Victoria women's field hockey team aided the Vikes to a 4-0 win over the University of Calgary, Sept. 30, on the UVic Field Hockey Turf.
NATIONAL DAY FOR TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION
- Today, Sept. 30, 2023, marked the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
- Also known as Orange Shirt Day, it is a national movement that brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the spirit of hope and reconciliation, and honours former residential school students, their families and communities.
- The Vikes would like to thank field hockey alumni Judy Cristante for coming out and speaking on the importance and impact of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as well as give the territory acknowledgment for the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Opening the scoring in the first quarter was Brooke Furtado, who bested the Calgary goalkeeper one-on-one to put Victoria ahead, 1-0, in the third minute.
- Chloe Langkammer opened the second-half scoring for the Vikes, breaking away downfield in the 35th minute to double UVic's lead, 2-0.
- A series of passes inside the circle got the ball to Melanie Robertson, who managed to shake her defenders and get an open look for a goal in the 49th minute.
- Awarded a penalty stroke in the 51st minute, Anni Kleinschmidt netted the goal from the spot to seal the Vikes' win, 4-0.
WORTH NOTING
- Anais Chace recorded her first shutout as a Vike, allowing no goals in 60 minutes in net.
- Four different Vikes scored in the win, while the four goals also mark the highest in a single game this season for UVic.
- Both the Vikes and Dinos move to 2-1-2 on the season after the decision.
